Scott E. Campbell wrote this article about the 5 “Must Haves” in construction marketing today.
I don’t know Scott personally, but I found his article to be more compelling and interesting than a lot of what you read about the construction industry these days.
Specifically I liked what he said about adjusting your mindset to today’s world. It’s true, the fundamentals of marketing don’t change much over time.
However, for the most part it’s not our father’s world where good work and a hand shake is all you need to succeed. Sure, you can get some work this way. But people are communicating differently than they were even 5 years ago. And let’s not forget about the way people do their research in this day and age.
That brings us to Campbells point about having a “dynamic, robust website”. A couple of photos and some contact info don’t cut it anymore. But don’t go wasting all your money on fancy web design just yet.
Here’s my philosophy that overrides everything I do in the world of marketing: You must answer the question, “How can I provide something of value up front to get my prospect to take action and buy from me?”
This boils down to what we call market research. Design your website around this concept. What does your market want? Answer that question and build your whole company around it.
And don’t worry, you don’t have to spend a lifetime crunching numbers and mining market data. Often all you have to do is ask your customer.
